Seit dem Unfalltod seines Vaters hatte Shouta Kaneda es nicht leicht im Leben. Trotz der Bemühungen seiner Mutter, war das Geld stets knapp und die Aussicht auf eine Universität zu gehen ein geradezu unerfüllbarer Traum. Doch um diesem Traum ein Stück näher zu kommen, arbeitet Shouta hart, sodass er gleich zwei Jobs auf einmal hat, um das nötige Geld zusammensparen zu können.
Dementsprechend reagiert er wenig begeistert, als ihm sein Onkel und Arbeitgeber eines Tages eine Gruppe von Studenten vor die Nase setzt, denen er im Rahmen des Solar Car Project ihrer Uni helfen soll ein solarbetriebenes Auto zusammenzubauen. Denn aufgrund des Zeitaufwandes dieses Projektes kann er nur noch halbtags arbeiten und verdient auch nur halb so viel Geld.
Doch können die Studenten rund um die engargierte Junko Yazaki den verschlossenen Shouta vielleicht doch noch für ihre Sache begeistern?
